Value of 40 year old ring

I am most upset as I have lost the diamond out of my diamond engagement ring which is 40 years old. It cost £40, 40 years ago and wondered if anyone had any idea what it would cost now. I don't know as yet how the insurance company will value it but I want to be sure I don't get ripped off.
Thank you

I think it will probably go on the size/cut of the diamond rather than age. Do you know the details?

Thanks but I dont know the exact size of the diamond, not sure whether 1/2 carat. I took the 18ct gold ring to a jewellers thinking that they could tell by the size of the setting and they said the same about the cut and carat but they said the insurance company could probably assess the value by comparing to the original price of the ring. Just wondered if anyone had any idea about what the price of a £40 ring would be in todays market just as an indication. I'm having to wait to put in the claim because our policy is in my husbands name and he's in hospital and they wont deal with me. They told me to get him to ring when he's back home and then have my name put on the policy so they can then deal with me. Doesn't seem to matter that the insurance is paid by direct debit from a joint account. Data protection gone mad aaarrrrr!
