Car Tax + Log Book Question

I have just obtained a car (for free! :j ) only problem the tax has run out.
I went to the post office to ask for a form, and they said you don't need one anymore, either the log book or reminder letter.
I have the log book, but I still have to send it off to the DVLA to get it registered in my name.
Can I sort out the tax with the log book registered in someone elses name? Or do I have to wait for the log book to come back in my name, and how long will that take?
I want to drive my car! :wall:

According to the DVLA website, you need a V10 from the post office, plus the 'new keeper supplement' from the existing registration document, an MOT certificate for the vehicle, plus an insurance certificate covering the vehicle.

I imagine the post office person misunderstood you when you asked - maybe they didn't realise that you didn't have a registration document in your own name yet?
Good luck!0 -
Nah I think he couldn't be bothered to find one because there wasn't any on the shelf!
Thank you x0 -
LOL - and they wonder why Post Offices are dying out...
Quite simple really: Customer Service (or lack of it!)0 -
Didn't need the form when I took my car off "SORN". If it is the new type log-book with barcodes they just scan it.0
