First thing I'd try is rawl plugs, decent ones like Uno would be best. I've used these for the same thing in the past and the worked a treat.

If it doesn't work then buy a new handle with conceled fittings and it should come with bolts which pass through the door and secure onto the other handle. Or if it's a door that no-one uses too much you could just buy the bolts, washers and nuts then install them on your current handle.

yeah i was thinking about raw plugs but i didnt know if it would clash with the key lock, its an internal living room door so its used alot.

i think i might go to b & q to see what i can get.

Matchsticks. Push the base of a burnt out matchstick into the hole, snap/cut off flush to the surface and screw into that. If you've got some put some wood glue in with the matchstick too.

The only problem with match sticks is that they are onle effective in solid timber, not hollow timber as thay can easily fall in to the void. Uno Rawl plugs are an ecellent product and I use them all the time as a tradesman. They come in various sizes. The small one might be OK and allow enough clearance for the lock.
