Laptop keyboard/password help

I have an oldish Dell laptop and some of the keys do not register I do not want to spend a fortune on it BUT found these and wondered if one would provide a solution:

Is it just a case of plugging them in and using that keyboard instead of the original?

The main problem I have is that the password cannot be entered into the computer. If I could get into it just once I would delete the password altogether and then just use the mouse.

Many thanks

How did you enter the password in the first place? Have you got special charactors in your password? You will probably find that the keyboard settings are set to a US keyboard and the special charactors are elsewhere, main culprits are " and @

Well I just did a Google on the problem and was advised to start in safe mode then delete the password. It has worked!

Also using the onscreen keyboard so don't need anything and has cost me nothing.
