Probably the best example yet of the struggle Microsoft and it's friends are having with the Vista thing.

They've been doing this since Vista was released, it's hardly news. Mind you it would be interesting to see what percentage of Vista sales have actually been downgraded to XP.It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
I know. It seems really bad business that some manufacturers (HP for example) are putting out some notebooks with Vista drivers only.0

On the BBC too: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7370821.stm
"Steve Ballmer said that XP could get a longer life if enough customers demanded it."0 -
Seeing !!! they're selling millions of licences, I fail to see how that can be seen as "doing badly". Sure sales have dropped but that's more to do with the fact that the PC has nearly reached critical mass in the home and business environment. For 99% of users a PC that's a few years old is more than fast enough for normal use and any OS out there now is more than capable of browsing the interweb, sending out a few e-mails to grandma, letting the kids talk to their 100 mates on MSN and banging out a letter to Points of View.0

Its not doing too bad at all.
In fact since its release its overtaken all the other OS's available (excluding XP) put together including double the amount of Mac users already.

As Conor says, not everyone is urgent need to replace their PC as for now it does what they require to do.0 -

Probably the best example yet of the struggle Microsoft and it's friends are having with the Vista thing.Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer confirmed last week that XP will no longer be available after 30 June.
But Dell will exercise the "downgrade rights" in the Business and Ultimate editions of Vista to install XP Professional. HP and other PC makers are said to be considering similar action.
That is a retailer offering a choice to their customers, it has nothing to do with people not wanting Vista, or Vista doing badly.0 -

true, but there must be something wrong, if customers who are buying new machines still want them with xp instead of vista, afterall the new machines should be more than capable of running vista quite easily, i cant remember when xp was a year old, a clammer for people to want to go back to millenium, and before u shoot me down in flames i currently use and like vista, i have had no problems with it, and my machine is roughly 4 years oldTake every day as it comes!!0 -

I don't think anyone wanted Millenium to start with, nevermind to downgrade to
Did XP come with any downgrade rights to any other OS?0 -
True enough but then ME was pretty awful. I seem to remember a lot of people sticking with 95 or 98 rather than upgrading. It's my problem, it's my problem

I can understand why businesses may wish to downgrade machines to XP, or have them preinstalled with XP, but I think in the majority of the home users it's because a friend has had a bad run with it, or knows some one who has, or has read something on the internet. Once again, a little knowledge is dangerous
