I am not sure whether you will be covered but in the past I have taken insurance but waited a couple of weeks before I call them. With some insurance, you are not covered for the first 14 days. Hope this helps.
  • I am currently in dispute with British Gas over damage done by one of their engineers when replacing a hot water cylinder under the Homecare agreement. To cut a long story short he managed to allow some insulating foam to get into our water system. It found its way to the bathroom tap which it blocked. They abrogated any responsibility and we had to call out the guy that installed our bathroom (at great expense). The bath had to be uninstalled (tiles hacked off etc) and the blockage cleared from behind where the bath was. I have sent the invoice to British Gas and I await their response. The level of customer service throughout this sorry affair was appalling. We were without a bath/shower for a month and nobody even thought to apologise.

I am looking at alternative (and much cheaper) plans to cover gas/central heating.

Hi I have been with british gas homecare for 20 years (with the same boiler), they are excellent, never had any trouble with call outs, even came out on christmas eve night one year (within 2 hours) when it was snowing.... the yearly service is worth the fee paid, had radiators replaced free of charge, pumps etc, as for your boiler making a noise now, my son when he bought his first flat had a problem with the heating, i rang them for him, and they said if he signed up for the year there and then they would come out and look at it, so he did, and they made the necessary repairs there, now thats good service, so yes sign up and call them in, they dont have any waiting periods that i am aware of. Hope this helps.

For central heating cover with annual service they are more expensive than my current British Gas Homecare 200 - £18.98/month vs £18.12/month. Although I do like the description of their service which promises 375 days/year availability. Now that's a neat trick.

We have them for boiler cover and a number of kitchen appliances. They are not cheap but we made a deliberate decision to take the financial hit for the peace of mind that we would get quick service in an emergency. And on every occasion that we've needed them we've had a service engineer out within 24 hours.

most CH insurance cover, require an inspection of your system first. most likely a BG engineer will look at your boiler and condemn it first. its a neat trick of theirs. they then quote you 3k to replace the boiler.
if they tag your old boiler etc, then you are not allowed to use it until repaired or replaced!

btw. a friend of ours had BG cover. they repaired the system last yr. it went wrong again within a few days. another person looked at it and was appalled at the BG workmanship.

    also remember:
at approx 240 quid per annum say over 5 yrs. that sort of money will get you a new boiler.
    Get some gorm.
  • I really can't fault British Gas Homecare they've been brilliant and very efficient

I cant fault BG either, think you should wait a couple of weeks before contacting them with a fault though.
