Wireless router Virgin Media

I have a problem with my wireless router in that when I try to connect to it it loses it's wireless connection (WLAN)
This has just happened out of the blue as I have never had any problems before.
I have checked that the modem is connecting to the internet by connecting it direct to the laptop and the router is showing a connection is made.
I have tried leaving the modem and router on with the pc off and the router always shows the WLAN is available. As soon as I turn the laptop on and try to connect to WLAN light goes off and the router can not be found........

My set up is Virgin Media BB, Wireless router, Laptop, XPSP2

Any ideas anyone???

The WLAN light should definitely not go off when you try to connect via wireless. Have you tried a re-boot of the router?

  • I must have reboot the router, modem, laptop between 10-15 times yesterday and ensured that I turned on in modem, router, laptop order and nothing.

When I try to connect to the router via the ethernet cable I get an error saying that IE can not perform the requested task (or something along those lines)

Are you sure that Virgin haven't cut you off?
  • Yeah that was one of my first thoughts, but I am able to connect to the internet direct through the modem.

Is there a reset button on the router? If a hardware reset does not work, it sounds foobar to me.

May well be a faulty router. You have problems when you plug in an ethernet cable? You might want to try a hard reset on it, there is usually a button or pinhole on the back that says reset. Be aware that this will wipe off all security settings from the router.
  • Thanks will have a try at the Virgin link and then try a reset of the router.

    Or try these:

    Deactivate firewalls
    Deactivate Anti-Virus software
    Deactivate ant-spyware software
    reboot both router and PC
See if the problem still exists

Why? Because all of these softwares can cause problems with Wireless and they 'over protect' one another. Virgin and probably your router already have built in virus scanning and firewalls and these may be knocking each out. For example, this is a very common problem on sky routers (recently switched from Virgin to Sky and been in IT support from when I had hair). But why now? Because an automatic update to one of these may have caused the problem

Problem still exists? Switch it all back on and reboot to both again to re-establish the settings.

Get a friend with a laptop or Wii to come around and try to connect to your Wireless, this will tell you if it is your PC or the Wireless at fault. Your PC, it's a configuration issue or driver issue, the Wireless - it's VMs problem.

Unless you are very computer literate, you will want to contact VirginMedia and request these things:

A line/tone test - they can monitor the speed of the connection to see if it alters while this occurs - will point to a faulty physical cable.
They'll get you do a router reset (if you haven't already) - don't worry, settings are hard coded from the factory so you will only lose changes you have made.
You may wish to consider turning off the security on the router too - get the connection stable and then instate security precautions (such as the software stuff at the top) - but once again, go through this with VM support.

Good luck and if I'm passing I'll try and offer further encouragement.

A further word of advice, IT support guys jump to conclusions - I did the same with my Sky broadband after it was timing out so I called support, they assumed it was something else. Neither of us fixed it. I changed one of the name servers (what tells your internet explorer where to look for a website) and it worked a charm. Not important but it brought a warm glow to my geeky heart.

    Good luck.
