Am I over a barrell with BT?

I've been a customer of BT for over 4 years now, my line was disconnected within the last few days due to a delayed bill payment - my error
I have my calls with talk talk and broadband with Orange.
I wanted to take the all-in-one package offered by talk talk and contacted them this morning to be told that I need my BT line re-connected before they can take over the line.
After speaking with BT they have told me that they will re-connect my line (no charge) but then I am held to them for 12 months...
Does anyone know any ways around this or am I just stuck paying more than I could be for another 12 months..?
Thanks so much in advance for any help - (I've been using this site for few years now but don't have my regular username and password with me as I'm at my parents due to not having interent access at home for the above reasons)

Pay them what you owe them, then see if you can get connected again via another company which doesn't have a long minimum contract. (eg post office - 15 days notice required, or phone co-op - 3 months minimum contract)0

Thanks so much for that Quentin, I paid the bill this morning - Do you know if I get connected with the post office will I be able sign up with talk talk an dhave them take over the line?0

Yes, just give them 15 days notice.0

Thanks again, sorry to have to ask again but I've just spoken to someone at Talk talk and they can't seem to confirm if they will be able to take the line over from the post office or not, they seem to think they can only help if it's a BT line - does anyone know any different??0

It's just poor cs at talk talk.
The line would be a "bt" line, which is what they want (rather than a cable line).0
