There are many choices - see the MSE CallCheckers - but, of course, Talk Talk bar some of them.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

If you are on the £9.95 option, then you don't need a prefix as every call, 24/7 is free, along with those to almost 30 countries not to mention the free broadband.

    Not really.

What about the ones you have to pay for? (They're not free are they?)

0044 and you have to drop the first 0 of the UK Number if you need to dial in Intl Format. Not all access numbers require you to do this.

Have you moved your line rental to BT or just your calls.?

so which do I have to pay for? the 0845 & 0870 presumably? whilst I concede those, I always try the saynoto0870 first for the regional alternative, but if there are others, do let me know, I always check my paper bill and as yet, I haven't been charged for any.

    and

Some calls may be inclusive, but they are not free. such as?.

I think I can help you.
I asked the same question yesterday.I knew there were numbers/websites you could join to make my calls cheaper, and Heinz was very patient with my endless questions and gave me 3 numbers to try.

The one I went for was the 18185(But from my talk Talk phone the number is different)Heinz said the 0845's were cheaper on that one,but warned me that Talk Talk may have blocked the number and It may not work.

I signed up,just made my first 0845 call, and the automated voice told me it would be half a penny a minute!
I then rang my Mum on a local call and was told that would be 1 penny a minute.

And it worked from my Talk Talk phone!

    I'm well chuffed.

18185 is the one to go for.And you can put another number in too.I put my mobile number in.Same thing, you put in a (long) number first and you are away.

    Good luck!
