Business Networking - one of the best forms of cheap advertising

Having had a good read through this forum, I've seen a lot of posts on how to get cheap advertising. I just wanted to add my views...
The one method of advertising which has consistently worked for me is Business networking e.g. local business breakfasts, lunchs etc... I run 2 businesses (a marketing business and also an online store) both of which have benefited from networking events.
Yes, I admit, they are really daunting when you first go to them - I'm not sure about you, but the thought of walking into a room full of strangers and striking up a conversation isn't exactly high on my list of ways to spend a couple of hours! But, I've been going to them for 6 months now, I've made some new friends, given and received some good referrals of business and it's not cost me much (usually £8-£12 a meeting including breakfast / lunch).
There's lots of large networking groups out there which want an annual fee and a fee for each meeting - and a lot of people think they're great. I'm on a limited budget, and look for local groups where possible e.g organised by Business Link or the Local Chamber of Commerce. There's also a lot of women only groups - check out Wire
Also, I've received business referred from Business Link - I met with an advisor to get some (free) advice and ideas on running my business and they referred me on to other businesses they thought I could help. I really think Business Link is a very under used resource, and can't recommend them highly enough and they're generally free to use.

I would agree with you aeryn for a business selling services.
If you are selling goods in volume however "advertising" as such works well.
Apart from business link & the local chamber you mention have you found any good networking events in London & South East?0
