Signature size problems

I needed to edit my signature earlier this week, & I understood that I'd have to keep it to within 5 lines in accordance with the changes that were made earlier this year. However, it won't let me add more than the one line I've got now - as soon as my signature looks like going into two lines or more I get a message saying my signature is too long. :( Have the limits been reduced even further? If not, could someone on staff take a look at my signature & let me know what's gone wrong. Thanks.

    Hi WDIAG.

Stating that your signature is too long and that you are only permitted 5 lines seems to be the 'default' error message if (a) there are just two many characters (including BBCode); or (b) the software just doesn't like the signature for some unfathomable reason.

It's a good idea to click the switchmode.gif button on the top right of the editor so that you can see the raw text of the code that makes up your signature. There can be an awful lot of unnecessary formatting BBCode, especially if the signature has been edited multiple times. I found it easiest to start from scratch with something simple, and then make it more and more complicated until I found the limit of what the software seems to be prepared to accept.

My signature is still a bit problematic. There are only two lines, but if I add even one character to the top line then the forum tells me I am only allowed 5 lines. However, I can add several characters to the bottom line without a problem. Inspecting the raw code doesn't seems to offer any clues.

sra's updated guide on signatures is useful, and describes the new rules: Signatures

However, it doesn't explain the 'quirkiness' of the forum when it is deciding if your updated signature conforms to them.

  • Thanks, fermi - I'll give what you say a try. As usual, I have so much to say & so little room in which to say it. :D
  • It's improving. Hopefully, I'll get it looking the way I want to soon. :)
