VOIP hardware.

Decided this was the best place rather than telephone board, apologies if I was wrong.

Like many others I have just found out about voipbuster.com, until now I have been using Skype.
I purchased a box off ebay that allowed me to use my digital cordless phone to make and receive Skype calls, rather than being tied to the computer (although it did have to be on).

I have tried to use the same box with voipbuster without success. Obviously I don`t want to spend more money if i don`t have to, but would like to get back to using the cordless.

The Skype box is called a USB adaptor, on the box it says things like....
USB to RJ11 converter
1 FXO for PSTN call relays
1 FXS for regular phone

There is no mention of Skype specifically on the box, but it is mentioned in the instructions.

The first question is, does anyone know if this box should work, or could it be in some way Skype specific.

If it cannot be used, what should I be looking for in a similar unit that should work?
I am using Windows XP and have a Linksys router.

Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

I've moved this to the phones board as you haven't had an answer on here.
    Torgwen.......... :) ...........
  • Hi,

Do you have a link for the device mentioned. Do you know if it's protocol is H.323, SIP or Other?

    Regards,
    Dave

Go into the configuration of the VoIP Buster program and change the audio device to that of the USB device.

If that doesn't work, try downloading x-lite software or 3rd party firefly and enter the required settings.

If you have a Linksys router then you would be better off using an ATA device, this allows you to make and receive calls without the PC been switched on.

A PAP2 ATA would be ideal. https://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk and https://www.broadbandstuff.co.uk . Make sure you don't purchase the Vonange locked one.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

Thanks for the replies. I have tried changing to USB device without success.

I appreciate what you say about using the router, but it`s in a home office and I don`t want to have to keep going to that room to answer it. I mainly use a networked laptop in another room.

Can`t understand why if the above box allows me to use my landline (cordless or wired) with Skype, I can`t use it or something similar with voipbuster.

    Thanks again.

Nothing stopping you plugging the ATA into the router, and then connecting a cordless phone, take it around the home.

Should work with the USB device, have to try using the device with x-lite or firefly set up to voipbuster.

Skype is proprietary - that's why you can't use their boxes on other services - and why Skype adapters are so cheap on Ebay.

Also you have to leave your computer on for Skype - the adapter is just a USB to phone adapter not a complete VOIP device.
