Huge bills from E-on??

I've signed up to this one..just waiting for the switch from scottish power from the properties previous tennant..I like the idea of no estimates...
They still carry out estimates if you don't send in reading's regularly. I tend to do it twice monthly if i can. Still teaching wifey to make sure she does it.0 -
OP make sure any bills are based on YOUR readings not a "reading" by your supplier (i.e. don't assume that because they say they have read it it will have been read right).
Like others have suggested, check that what you think is your meter STOPS when you turn off everything (i.e. main switch) - it is very common in new builds for meters and properties to be mixed up especially when the meters are located remotely from the actual property (i.e. in a communal area)

MPI have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.

Ah yeah good point make sure they have the correct metre number! Also check if its a single rate metre and such..0 -
I work for a power company, we're told average daily usage is usually around 3upd for gas and 5 upd for elec. I'd argue these figures aren't entirely accurate (I use 8upd elec but only 1.4 upd gas in a one bedroomed flat, for example!), but to me, it seems that 16 1/2 units of electric a day is more than excessive.
I would more than argue that these figures aren't accurate ! They are ludicrously low. Except 16.5 units of electricity per day, which is not "more than excessive".
I would say these are a lot more realistic:-

If the OP is talking about combined gas and electricity, I would say that their bill isn't that high.
My current (sorry !) electricity usage is 13 kWh per day.
My gas was 7.6 m3 per day.
Also, someone above quotes 13p for electricity - that is high, I pay 9.36p (main rate).
3 bed detached, gas CH/water; electric cooker, WM, fridge, freezer, tumbler, dishwasher, etc, etc.
Those figures were from mid Nov to April 1, when I switched to E.on !
Don't forget you have just covered the 3 coldest months of the year, your consumption should drop a lot now. Your annual bill won't be 4 times your last one !
It is very difficult to compare bills with other people, there are so many variables. Just having the CH a couple of degrees higher will make a huge difference over a 3 month winter quarter. Do you have a bath or shower ? Do you cook meals using the oven and all four rings on the cooker ?
In a nutshell, I would say that your consumption isn't excessive, but that perhaps you could see what tariff you are on and perhaps save a bit there.
Energy IS expensive !0 -
Just want to say a big thank you to everyone for your time and effort. I am going to sit down with all the figures tonight and go through all these comments and see if I can't get to the bottom of it!!
A million thanks to all for your helpI can't look into the future, but the futures where I'm walking to0 -
just noticed your post and I had the same problem with my new build. It turned out that on the paper bills all was correct but when the man came to read the meters our serial numbers were mixed up with the neighbours.
i.e. I lived at number 4 and had neighbours number 2 and number 6. when the man read our meter it was actually serialled up to number 6 who was there 24/7 and they got our bills. Apparently the builders had mixed up all the serial numbers.
Also don't forget with most new builds you have an new IDT charge for about £50pa for the priviledge of the builders using contractors other than TranscoTopCashback £1792.63My Little World0
