If you use a pawnbroker for jewellery, basically u give them the jewellery and they then offer you a sum of money and u have up to 6months to redeem the jewellery. If after the 6 months you dont have the money some will allow you to pay the interest outstanding and then resign it for another 6months.
Have a look in yellow pages c whats available in you area.

    Good Luck

I've used pawnbrokers. I didn't get much, £75 was the most for one good ring. It was Cash Generators. You can either do pawnbroking which lasts seven months or BuyBack which is for less valuable items and lasts one month. Both can be extended for a fee. They were fine to deal with.

But it sounds like you need to find a more long term solution. Can you talk to the council and pay part of the council tax bill rather than all of it? Have they given you a liability order?
  • Hi there

You have been mentioning jewellery. Do you have any scrap gold? Things like broken chains, bracelets or odd earrings? The price of gold has soared recently and I took just a few odd broken things in last week and I was given £200 there and then.

    Just an idea.

    Hi

have you got a Credit Union around you? They may allow you to take a "freedom loan"?

I would also think that you really need to talk to one of the debt charities if your situation is this volatile http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/loans/debt-help-plan#help

  • Thank you all so much for your helpful advice.

Took my expensive jewellry to a pawnbroker and got offered £50 for my ring which is valued for insurance purposes at just over £2k plus another £100 for a ruby ring and earring set which are valued at just over £3k.

Said no, but may go back tomorrow.

Have managed to get the loan sort out to pay it over four weeks starting next week.

Will contact Council Tax office tomorrow and plead, but don't hold out much hope.

Have cancelled only DD due this week and will call them tomorrow and explain and offer to pay next week when cash flow returns.

Spoke to bank about extending my OD. They said no cos my ex is in major financial trouble and we have a joint acct which was still live. So they suggested cancelling it. It got cancelled there and then and they still said no as it takes until 20 May for system to update and then I can have my extended OD for up to 2 years when it would be reviewed. I HATE BANKS!!!!!

Am going to sort out as much stuff as possible to put on ebay. Am going to create a new account and email just for this new 'venture' so can track it easily and start my feedback again as ex stuffed that up too.

All is not totally lost, but not brilliant. Major headache, very stressed and close to tears, but feeling like I can conquer this.

I think it may be worth mentioning that valuation for insurance purposes are no good for giving you an idea of an items worth, I believe they are an estimate of how much it would to replace an item & not on it's intrinsic worth.

Don't cry about it; if you have any assets, like your jewellery why not have them valued and sell them. You won't get the price they are insured for. Even with sentimental value aside, if it would help ease things, then do it. One day you may be able to replace them. Peace of mind is more important or you may make yourself ill.
