Goji Berries - easy to grow?

Comments

  • I've got 9 goji berries and for two years they done nothing now all of a sudden they have really started growing and showing buds for the first time, so I'm hoping for a heavy crop this year, I think it mite've been the strong frost we had. I'm also trying to grow another power fruit called a Honey Berry, will let you know how I get on. :T:rotfl:;)
  • I have a load of goji berry plants that I have grown from seed this year - just wondering if anyone else has grown them and knows whether to pinch the tips out or not, as they are starting to look rather straggly....?

Also, are they deciduous or evergreen as I have see conflicting information in the web?

I had one of the "free just pay postage" last year from Good Food I think. It grew quite a lot in the first year and I did trim it back as it was getting in the way. I was very surprised it survived the very cold winter as it's in a pot. It's grown about as much as it did last year but no flowers as yet. Perhaps I will have to wait until the third season for flowers/fruit as surfsister has suggested in her very comprehensive post. Yes, they are deciduous (or mine is anyway).

BTW, off topic but I'm looking forward to making your marrow chutney again this year, foreign correspondent, especially as I'm trying to grow my own marrows! I ended up making loads last year and we've just finished the last jar .
  • thanks billieboy for the goji info - how big was your goji plant when it arrived? - glad you like the marrow chutney too - I made loads!!! Everyone I have given a jar to has liked it too!

    Definitely deciduous.

Mine has problems growing upright, I'm treating it like a weak climber now.

  • aha - ixwood, that seems to be the case with mine - they seem a bit sprawly rather than bushy as I expected! thanks folks, now I know they are deciduous I wont throw them away when all the leaves drop off!

I'm growing some plants from berries also purchased from Julian Graves.

The berries sat in the back of my fridge for months & then were planted in a pot in the house in the spring. Loads of them germinated in less than a month & I have several plants progressing in pots outside in the garden.
The ones I transplanted out of the original pots are still smaller than those still crowded into the original pot, so perhaps it's best to plant the seed in individual pots to avoid transplanting.

I bodged together some support for mine and it's much happier. It's actually going up now.

Though I may regret the bodged support when I need to replace it.

I've found that as well - certainly seem to be "loners". I just transplanted 4 nice ones, and am going to nip the growing tips out of two to see if they will bush out.
