Help needed re.mobile broadband with dongle

I know very little about this subject but maybe someone can put me straight.
I want to use a dongle with my laptop to access the web via broadband but I do not want to be tied into a contract so pay as you go seems the thing for me.I only require this every few months for holidays in the UK weekends away etc.If I buy an unlocked dongle from ebay and a sim card from one of the mobile companies can I top up the sim as and when I want to? I do not want to buy a sim card and then find I am obliged to top up with £10 a month or whatever,I just want to use it until it has nearly run out and then bung on another £20 or so.Can I work it this way,if so what is the best sim card to get?Or if ayone can suggest a better way to acheive what I am trying to do please let me know.

Thanks for the reply Browntoa but thats no good for me as it looks like the topups only last a month.Sometimes I will go 2-3 months without using the service.

So use another mobile operator with £1 per day surfing. Use this forum search, as it has been discussed many times before!

I have an unlocked dongle and use a (free) vodafone PAYG SIM card to browse for a pound a day. I just top up as and when I need to online.There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.
