sometimes by adding an experienced (and over 25) driver, ie a parent, can bring the price down
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)
  • when you say adding someone how would i add them if i needed to be the main driver

What I did with my 20 year old 2 years ago was to take out a 2nd car insurance in my name and add his name as a driver. It was his car, he paid for everything, just we got a cheaper insurance that way by doing that. It doesn't help him build up his no claims bonus I know, but otherwise there was no way he or we could have afforded the ridiculous prices.

We used the CIS (Cooperative Insurance) and they were quite reasonable and understanding of the problems of young people!

Also, have you tried on https://www.confused.com as referred to by Martin on this site.

    Good luck
  • Hi Ineedinfo,
You dont mention whether you did the PASS Plus part of your driver learning.

If you take this 6 (? I think) hour course, it will cost you about £130, but then several firms will give you at least 30% discount.

So, spend £130, save £400 per year.

Insurers that give the Pass Plus discount, include
Norwich Union,  Tesco,  errrr  cant remember the others, you will need to Google.

Yes, you are correct, but by the time he finishes university, in theory he will be earning a lot more than he is currently on a student loan and part time work.  He can therefore, being that much older, afford the higher insurance premiums he will have to pay.    It's a case of putting off the evil day until he's financially a bit better off.

By the way some insurance companies do give you a cheaper quote if you have got the Pass Plus - true. But bear in mind you can probably get cheaper than that if you shop around anyway. Don't be tricked into thinking that 40% or whatever off is the cheapest necessarily.

Shouldn't this be in the insurance board?

    hi i am 18

Rather than the pass plus there's the max driver which is aimed at younger people. It's in conjunction with Max Power magazine and Adrian Flux insurance. As far as i'm aware it's been put together because they know that young people don't drive like their mum, so it's designed to teach you how to handle a car and this that and the other.. Bit like Pass Plus for boy racers / potential boy racers.

It's also cheaper than Pass Plus at £99 or £199 if you do the crash course. Also get's you a gaurenteed 30% off insurance at Adrian Flux
