Best Floor For a Kitchen?

Hi - we are in the process of having our kitchen re-done and wondered what floor is best? It is a big space with a dining area at the one end. We have had ceramic tiles before and are not too keen as we have a little one and am scared of the damage they would do if they fall! We quite liked the idea of vinyl flooring (tiles) but when chatting to our buliders, they reckon they dont stick down well and move??? Wondered if anyone has any experience of vinyl tiles or could recommend some alternatives?

Good afternoon: I'm a big fan of Marmoleum but it isn't a cheap option.

img_1979.jpgHad loads of hassle removing the old cork tiles that were put down by the previous owners - think vinyl might come up a bit easier if you changed your mind.

But we've gone for laminate in http://www.theupsidedownhouse.9f.com/cgi-bin/i/images/img_1979.jpg

See what you think - this is the dining area/kitchen to be...

I have a similar setup, with a long kitchen with dining area at one end. We actually ended up choosing a thick vinyl with a tile pattern on. Rather than vinyl tiles which can come up easily, the vinyl has been fitted as one piece so we don't have that problem. Guests have actually been stroking the floor to see if it's tiles or not!!

It was a relatively cheap option whilst we decided what we wanted to do, but it's worn well, is warmer than actual floor tiles and we've ended up keeping it as a longer term solution. Plus, it's easy to mop clean!

Vansboy - looks fabulous, wow, what a size your kitchen/diner will be when its done!

Thanks for your advice everyone, it is really helpful to have different views - reckon I need to go to a shop and have a feel/look at some options.
