Just thought I'd update you on my quest for cheaper phone calls.

Just made an 0845 call on my 0808-1-703-703(18185) and a lady told me it was going to be half a penny a minute!
Now that is interesting - their website shows weekday daytime 0845 calls via the 18185 prefix or the 08071703703 gateway number should be charged at 3p/minute. Their site shows the ½p rate is for evenings and weekends - and then only when the 18185 prefix is used!
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

So Heinz,do you think scullduggery may be involved?

Is there any way I can find out exactly what I am going to get charged?

If the web site differs, they always say that the tariff announcement is correct - so I'm fairly certain your online 18185 calls log will confirm you were charged 4p connection + ½p/minute for that 0845 call if you dialled via the 08081703703 gateway number..

Just been on 18185's website and have seen the 3p per minute 0845 tariff.

    I was charged(Or hope I was)half a penny a minute.

I went on the FAQs page and saw a question that relates to my query, and the answer was if the tariff quoted differs from the message on the phone, the phone message tariff is what you will pay. They said that sometimes there are special offers on that are not reflected in the tariffs.

I am writing each call I make down, the duration, and the quoted price. And I will compare it with my 1st bill.It will be interesting.I don't know if I trust this site...But will give it a month.

Is there a way I can keep an eye on my bill as I make the calls?

Yes. Log into your account and view your calls!

They usually appear within a few minutes.

Oh dear...Came out a bit wonky didn't it...

It looks ok,with the VAT and the connection fee it is probably right.

I am so used to not using my phone during the day...If I'm not careful I will end up paying more in the long run!

But it is good for the odd unavoidable call.

Here is a list of my call charges so far with 18185.

    5m 57s 0845 8p
    2m 07 local 8p
    27m 36s local 33p

    Total 49p

    Does that look right?

    (Local calls 1p per minute

    0845 Half a penny a minute.)

    Plus VAT and connection fee.

I copy and paste call records from 18185's website into an Excel spreadsheet when I want to do some analysis.

    5 columns:

    Date
    Time Number dialled
    Duration
    Cost (incl. VAT)

It appears your calls (you might want to go back to your wobbly post above and remove the details because the private numbers you called are visible) cost:

    Your 0845 605 0707 call @ 12:47pm lasted 5 minutes 57 seconds and cost 8p incl. VAT

Your 01323xxxxxx call @ 12:54pm lasted 2 minutes 7 seconds and cost 8p incl. VAT

    Your 01403xxxxxx call @ 1.32pm lasted 27 minutes 36 seconds and cost 33p
