Student Benefit Help????

I will be going to university in September as a full time student, I live on my own in a flat and need to pay rent, I have applied for stundent loans but these alone are not enough to pay rent and live on, are there any benifits I could claim or help with finances to help support me??

Kind Regards Keiron.

No I think you have to do what almost all students have to do now which is find some part time work to help pay your rent. You will as a full time student however be eligible for a full Council Tax Rebate. You will just need to tell your LHA and show them proof of your student status.

Gillian is right - unless you have a disability, or dependents, you will only be able to access the normal student finance ie loan and possibly a grant.

The uni will have a hardship fund for people who hit financial difficulties while on the course, but it is quite tough to get and you can't rely on it for living costs.

Plus, they will expect you to seek work during the holidays, if not during semesters.

Try and begin seeking work asap, before everyone else realises they have no money and start applying!

Or, if you can, try and get a job now in a store which will allow you to transfer when you go to uni. I know River Island have a policy of allowing students to transfer to the store within their uni town, even if it means creating a job for them!

Tesco are pretty good too, as are Boots, I believe.

It's also very unusual for a student to be able to rent a whole flat for him/herself. If not in university accommodation, sharing a flat with others would be what would be expected on a student income, even when working part time as well. Have you applied for the maintenance bursary?
