Fitting blinds

Given my escapades yesterday this has now fallen into the realms of money saving ;)

I am a reasonably good DIYer but there is one thing that has always given me problems and it is fitting blinds in this house of ours (was not a problem in previous houses). For various reasons I need ro drill vertically upwards in the recess of the window to fix the blind mountings (no alternaitve). The problem is that the lintils above the window seem to be iron girders.

My masonry bit takes me so far I then have to switch to a steel bit which just refuses to go through the girder. I ruined several drill bits yesterday. Is there a knack of getting through these girders? Or are there alternative fixings that work.

Thanks
Ivan

PS: The money saving bit relates to cost of drill bits, my sanity and the vast sums of money I had to put in the swear box yesterday.
I don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!

  • Had the same problem myself a few times. The only answer that I know of is to make sure that your drill bits are sharp (new), that they are a decent quality and don't drill too fast or apply too much pressure. If you do, you will find that cheap and or blunt drill bits can melt and go all distorted. You can try drilling a small hole and then expand it with a larger drill.

All of the above and drill at a slow speed (beware of the red hot bits flying out)
