Can anyone help, broadband running fine this afternoon. Then I had a visitor, turned the computer off. When I turned it back on at 7pm and launched Firefox, error 623 came up. And it told me 'Error 623: The system could not find the phone book entry for this connection' and closed. I reloaded the internet and ever since it has been slower than dial up, or around dial up speed.

My isp is Tiscali 2mb broadband, have been on the phone to them twice for 45 minutes each, the first one, did no checks other than help me delete my dial up connection (modem) and do a new internet connection from scratch, but it was still slow, he did not believe me it was still slow, he then kept insisting I needed to run my virus checker and did I have a firewall. (I do Comodo)

The next person on the second phonecall made me run a speedtest on zdnet which took a while to load but ran, got those results, then took me through tiscali speedtest which did not load though waited over 5 minutes whilst he was on the phone. He checked my line, said everything from his end looked fine and said he will have to escalate to second line support who will call me back within 72 hours.

I googled error 623 and tried the never dial an internet connection from tools etc on IE but no difference.

I am running my anti virus now, just in case, but as I am usually very careful, doubt its that. Any help appreciated.

I pay £9.99 a month for a slow 512 Kb Tiscali broadband connection. Usually this is fine as I don't need to download any large files etc. However, recently, on weekends, it has either become very slow or I've not been able to get a connection onto their servers.

I suspect that Tiscali is having capacity problems and my service is being sacrificed. Has any body else had problems?

    Thanks

Just thought I would post back and update.

The above problems started on Saturday, had the 2 long phonecalls Saturday night as mentioned.

Ran virus test, and 2 antispyware tests, came back clean on Sunday. Decided to run my Dell XP cd to repair files, in case the internet problems were due to my pc, did this (took ages) and it did not change the speed, but my pc now loads up a lot faster and my dvd drive speed has gone back up to normal. Two unexpected great side effects.

Monday night got back from work and received phone call from Tiscali second line support, who took me through the tiscali speed test several times, the 1st time the speed was actually 1/4 of a 512 connection (its normally 2mb). I think he was adjusting something at the time as the speed kept inching up and just reached 512 speed by the 4th speed test. Then on the 5th speed test the connection dropped right back down again. The Tiscali guy sounded really disappointed when I told him this.

At that point he said that the problem was probably at the Tiscali end and he would call back Tuesday evening.

No call was received (but I worked overtime, did 1471 to check when I finally got home)
But by Wednesday evening (yesterday) my speed had gone right up to normal if not a little faster than normal. :j
