email address query

I joined Virgin Media a few months back & they provided me with an email address to get me up & running. A few weeks back I received an email from a mail order company thanking me for my order but I knew nothing about this order & contacted them by phone. They told me the person who had placed the order had the same email address as me! They assured me they would investigate this & I have had an email of apology from this company to confirm I would not be liable for anything. I thought no more of it until yesterday when I tried to log into the Boots website. I put in my virgin email address but it wouldn't accept my password so I asked for a reminder to be sent to me. Once I'd received that I was able to log into my a/c (or so I thought) but it brought up the same name & address as the mail order catalogue company had given me before & I was able to see the last order through Boots was back in 2002. I have never had any problems sending or receiving mail but do wonder if ISP's re-issue email addresses that were once assigned to someone else? Has anyone else come across anything like this? thank you for any replies

  • Sounds like your boots account may have been compromised rather than someone else using your email account.

    Use stronger passwords! :)

    Unfortunately they do regenerate.

I took a new account out with Demon, and keep getting emails for someone called Norman on my account.

I suppose it's like telephone numbers, after 6 months BT will reissue the number and you will occasionally get phone calls for the old owner.
A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you just the way you are.

Best thing to do is not use the email address given to you by your ISP at all. Just ignore it. Get yourself a free email address from gmail, hotmail etc. or buy a domain name with email hosting.

Using your ISP's email address ties you to that ISP, so if you want to move to another ISP for any reason you will have to get a new email address and tell it to all the people who have your old address.
