You don't have to buy your music from iTunes to put it on an iPod. You can get music from anywhere (rip from CD etc), import it into iTunes from a hard disk folder and then transfer it to the iPod.
The "not getting an iPod because I don't want to be tied in to iTunes" argument doesn't stack up really.0
