SatNav from Ebay?

I have no clue when it comes to pda or gps but I need to get myself a system quicksmart due to my job expanding and covering new areas of the UK that I have no clue about.

I have had a scan through ebay because i am assuming that that is where i will find the cheapest setup but there is SOOOO much to choose from it is giving me a headache.

I dont want to spend more than £150 if I can help it so any help with either ebay bargains of other bargains would be greatly appreciated.

I really just want someone to point me at a full setup and say - "buy that - it is good"

Thanks

Milly

I've recently gone down the PDA + Bluetooth GPS route and I really wouldn't recommend it. Having 2 lots of chargers in the car is a pain and everytime one of them is switched off I have to go through a painful bluetooth reconnection. The PDA software setup was fiddly and it's difficult to use without the stylus, something that makes it frustrating when driving.

From experience I would recommend saving up for a tomtom Go unit as they are significantly less hassle in all respects.

leave ebay alone they are generally the cast of that dont suite people
have just bought a tom tom 300 from dixons they are priced at £348 ONLINE but mse does have a £25 discount code on one of the shopping forums plus if you use greasypalm you also get 1.5% off the total and if you cant afford it all at one go they do 0% for 9 months so save it up at £30 a month as i presume you will be getting expenses for your new job
need to have a lightbulb moment
  • i extracted a nokia 9300 communicator upgrade from vodafone customer retention dept and then bought the tom tom mobile 5 software and gps receiver its great as i carry a mobile anyway.

    Welcome to MSE :hello:

If you are looking to buy any Sat Nav system from ebay remember 'Buyer Beware'.

If you are buying a Pocket PC/PDA Sat Nav system from ebay, try to avoid the ones that say the software is preinstalled. I'm not saying this happens all the time but in a lot of cases the software has been loaded illegally and if you have any problems with the PDA it was loaded onto and need to reinstall it you wouldn't have the install CD's.

Personally I prefer the Tomtom GPS system be it on a Pocket PC/PDA or Tomtom Go. But (I know this is slightly over your budget) it may be worth looking at the Garmin Sat Nav here for £199

I would also strongly recommend you have a look at

    www.pocketgpsworld.com

as they have lots of helpful information to do with Sat Nav. They also have a very helpful forum as well.

    Hope this helps ;)

    Just another thought.

As a stop gap until you do get a Sat Nav system I can highly recommend the Philips spiral bound county maps. Normally available in most book shops/petrol stations etc. These list all the roads in the county. When I was out on the road before the days of Sat Nav I found them to be a lifesaver!

  • Smartnav from Trafficmaster are good. And they have 24 hour operators to help unlike the other systemssuch as TomTom. Slightly more expensive but loads better in terms of features and facilities.
My mind not only wanders .......... sometimes it leaves completely
