Up until two years ago I did virtually all the work myself. But sitting on the gravel in the rain battering the hell out of a stubborn nut that would either round or shear off.......getting too old for that now.

As has been said bigger hammer, andgle grinder or saw is the way forward.. :)

Freeze release spray seems a good idea in principle, supposedly helps shrink the metal, but didn't help when I had a screw head snap off and tried to use mole grips on the body of it.

Freeze release spray is more to crack open the corrosion on the joint/screw/whatever than anything else.

Well, got to the local garage I trust with the car at 9.45 and waited outside, the head bloke arrived and we had a chat about the car and I left it there.

Went off did the weeks shopping and returned to find, they'd had no luck budging the knackered bolt or freeing the nut at the top. The mechanic was using Oxyacetylene and a combination of large hammers to free it.

After an hour, he used something which resembled a saw on the airline to finally break through the bolt. It then took a whacking 10 minutes to fit the new lower arm.

It cost £60 but that also included replacing a wheel stud which was broken by Costco.

It's the third time I've used Supertyres in Dunstable and they were yet again fantastic.
  • Hi Keith

I am glad you have sorted it.

I don't know how applicable this to your case, but it might be useful to know for future reference Nut Splitter can be handy in some situations!
