first child to university

Hi folks

Not sure if this is the right thread area, but here goes anyway.

My son is going to university in September. He is the first person from either mine or my wifes family to go to uni. I have heard there is a £1000 award to the first child of a family that attends university?

Does anyone know if this is true? And if it is, does anyone know how and where we can claim it?

  • I think that will probably depend on the university he goes to and the course he chooses. When looking at all the different universities find out about the bursaries and grants. Some may be income or course specific and some might be if you're the first child. I don't think that there is a national grant available as I am the first child to go to uni in my family and I have never heard about it. For further questions you may want to choose the student money saving board.
  • Thanx QuirkyChemistry. I am so proud of my son for being the first uni kid, but this funding business is a nightmare.
BTW, like your handle - is there a story behind it?

I was the same as your son. Well done to him.

When I started uni (2002) they had a bursary similar to that so maybe. My uni was Durham btw.

  • Funding is quite a hassle. Just get your student loan forms in as soon as you have your P60 and don't tick the boxes so that info can be shared with the uni. I would advise that the uni isn't chosen solely on money reasons. A bursary is nice but it's better to have a uni you're happy with. Martin has an article on here if you want to look at other bursaries that are granted by other organisations. These links might be useful if you haven't looked at them before.

As for my name, I'm a chemistry student and I quite like the word quirky. Got a nice sound to it and the way it is spelt is a bit like the word (a bit like the word awkward), if that makes any sense.
  • This £1,000 for the first child in a family to go to university may be an urban myth. I work in a Student Funding Office and we are starting to get enquiries about it, but it is news to us. Universities will offer a bursary to students, depending on certain criteria, so check these out, because they are all different and make sure you don't opt out of the datashare, otherwise this time next year you'll be wondering why your mates all have bursaries and you don't and people like me will be running round with our heads on fire trying to sort you out!

I always understood it as part of the grants system that is now defunct...
  • I got a bursary. The criteria for mine was to be the first in the family and to be a local student

  • My daughter has been told that she is not eligable for this grant as the uni she chose was not her first choice.
  • I think this is entirely down to the HE institution they go to. The one I work, comes up with a number of their own grants - some are to do with distance from the institution the person comes from, some are to do with what course they did before etc.

  • ive heard about this again that if you are the first child in a family to go to university you can get a one off free payment?

As I highly suspect this is not true, but could anyone confirm? If it is true, how do I go about getting this?
