Basically, our 3+ yr old Compaq monitor flashes on and off on boot up, and the only way of sorting it seems to be to physically unplug the Paower lead for a few hours.
Fair to assume it is shot?

test the monitor on another PC, or another monitor on your PC, as the video card is also a suspectUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -
Thanks....just trying monitor out on my work laptop, and it came up OK. guess I will have to borrow a monitor to try with the PC.
PC is a Compaq about 3+yrs old, plenty of memory, and it seems a shame to have to scrap it. I don't use it for games, just work and internet, so maybe it would be cheaper to get somebody to change the video card, and maybe 'service'it whilst at it.O would some power the giftie gie us to see ourselves as others see us.

chances are, being badged (compaq) you have no discrete video card, instead the motherboard will have it integrated, usually an easy way to tell is looking at the back of the pc, is the monitor connection next to the USB, speaker etc. connections, or a few inches away, in the middle of an empty metal strip? either way a cheapo video card should be available for £20 or so, easy to fit, only need to work out pcie or agpUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0

The Video connection is directly below, and absolutely in line with all the others, so as you say probably on the same thing.
I gather my OH has a good techie at the school where she works, so I think it will be a route through there.
Many thanks for your help.O would some power the giftie gie us to see ourselves as others see us.

It could be a faulty mains lead....known that before. Try swapping it with another.0
