I have been a diesel car driver for the last 20 years. At one time you had to find out where the taxis filled up, otherwise you had to go to the far end of the forecourt, uncovered, where the trucks went.

What really annoys me is that the UK must be the only country in the world where we pay more for diesel than petrol. Everywhere else I have been, the diesel has been between between 40% and 80% of the cost of petrol. I was in France last week, where diesel was 1.10euro (74p) against 1.38euro (94p) for petrol. In Spain and Portugal the difference is greater.

Diesel cars are more fuel efficient, and HGV's depend on it. So why the hell do we have to put up with such exploitation?

Probably cos our chancellor is a complete pillock (meant in the nicest possible way) and finds that the easiest way to make money is to tax the motorist ... what he needs to realise is that we are human too!!

...but the road fuel duty is the same on LS diesel (low sulphur) as it is on LS petrol, 47.1p per litre.

So the wholesalers/retailers must be charging more for the diesel in the first place, to make up the difference in the retail price...

Incidentally, France, and other countries are in the process of raising diesel duty to harmonise it with the duty paid on petrol. It wasn't long ago that French motorists were paying only 45p per litre for diesel.
