Partial refund?

I've bought an item of clothing that was listed as BNWT. When it arrived, it had no tags on it, and I'm doubtful that it's even new. I've contacted the seller, who's being difficult, to say the least. I'm about to file a Paypal claim, but before I do, I wanted to get some advice from you lovely people.
I don't want to send the item back. Even if I get a full refund, it'll still cost me a few quid to post it back. I don't care about the money, but I hate the idea that I should lose out because this idiot seller was dishonest with his listing. I'd prefer just to get a partial refund. The item is fine, and I'll wear it. But I did pay a bit more for it than I normally would have just because it was listed as BNWT.
Has anyone had any experience with requesting a partial refund via a Paypal claim?

If you make a claim with paypal, they will tell you to return it at your cost for a full refund, you could ask the seller for a partial refund.
One thing to bear in mind, some sellers classers BNWT as Brand new with tags, and some class it as brand new withOUT tags!! I have been caught out myself on this issue before. x0 -

Can you not request a partial refund via Paypal? I'm sure that you could in the past, but I haven't filed a claim in a couple of years.
I've been buying and selling on Ebay for over a decade, both in the States and in the UK. BNWT has meant "Brand New With Tags" for as long as I can remember. There's even an abbreviation guide somewhere. Sellers don't get to make up their own definitions for the abbreviations. Otherwise there's no point to having abbreviations at all.0 -
brand new without tags should be BNWOT0

The best way to negotiate is not through Paypal/Ebay's complaints procedure but through talking to the seller directly.
Decide how much you want back ie enough to dry-clean the article if you paid over £25 for it .
If it was bought for under £10 then just ask for the cost of p+p or something like that.
If you get a 'no' then return it and get a full refund.0 -

I tried that, but he's a jerk and refuses to acknowledge that he's at fault. He says that the item came like that (with the dirt that's on it). He also insists that BNWT stands for "Brand New Without Tags", even though I sent him a link to the Ebay page with all of the abbreviations
This really isn't about the money. I just don't want him to get away with being dishonest and rude. And I don't want it to cost me money.0 -
OK Rainbow, let's look at some other options - they won't get you a partial refund but they'll pee off your seller good and proper........
1. Look at his listings. Are there any other items that are BNWT? If so, send a message to any bidders telling them of your experience and advising them to ask the seller some questions about his claims (and a photo of the tag!)
And/Or
2. Report any of his items that are shown as BNWT to ebay. (Fraudulent claim - a policy breach).

Hmm......................."Love you Dave Brooker! x"

Brooker Dave, I think you missed the point completely. If it costs me money to punish this seller for lying to his bidders, then I'm the one who loses out. Again. He's already screwed me over. Why would I want to screw myself some more? What exactly would that accomplish?
I think that you're trying a bit too hard to find hypocrisy where it does not exist.0
