Equestrian events are one of 28 games in the Olympics, and have been staged on 22 occasions since 1900. They are among the few events where both male and female athletes compete on equal terms.

Hong Kong has long enjoyed a reputation as a centre for excellence in racing, as well as for its equine facilities and welfare; it is also renowned for staging world-class large-scale international events.
So it was not altogether surprising that in July 2005, The International Olympic Committee selected Hong Kong to host the Equestrian Events, including the Olympic and Paralympic Equestrian Events, of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
The 2008 Olympic Equestrian Events will take place in Hong Kong at the competition venues Sha Tin (Jumping and Dressage) and Beas River Country Club (Eventing) from the 9th to the 20th August (with three contingency days from the 21st to the 23rd August).
A total of 12 days of competition, 4 to 5 hours of competition each day (Dressage: 4 days, Jumping: 4 days, and Eventing: 4 days).
There will be 200 competition horses and 25 reserved horses involved.
The Paralympic Equestrian Events will take place from the 7-11 September, a total of 5 days of competition, with 78 competition horses and no reserved horses.
