Plasterboard problem

Putting up plasterboard on the ceiling and hit a problem.

The area where the kitchen ceiling / meets the hall ceiling / meets the top of the underside of the stairs.....has a metal joist hanger which wasn't fixed accurately and is hanging down roughly 8mm from the joist. It's perfectly secure and isn't a problem in any way....but the plasterboard join has fallen at this area. As the 1st board can't screw flush to the joist because of the metal hanger....the edge of it will be roughly 8mm lower than the next board which will be fixed to the flat joist just past the hanger.

What's the best way to deal with this? The ceiling will not be getting plastered, just taped and filled. Is it feasable to take up the difference with joint filler? Is the filler more likely to crack at a later date because of the thickness?

Any other suggestions please?

Not a tradesman but as it is 8mm and your plaster board will be thicker can you not just cut out the plasterboard in the area of the metal joist hanger. Then fill the remaining area. Just my humble opinion.

Oh and why won't you be plastering the ceiling?
My opinions are purely my own act on them at your own risk

Plastering isn't as common here as it it elswhere. The done thing here is to tape and fill the plasterboard joins.

Even new builds are done this way.

Where are you from? I would love to not have to get a plasterer in to finish by ceiling.

Can you take a pic and post it?

And as for taping and joining, its ok till someone damages the wall, and then you have to take the time in filling it and then sanding it. If you get it wrong it will stand out a mile. Skimming in my eyes gives it a better finish and also a protective coat.

    JMC.......Scottish Highlands.

jason.....will try to get a pic up later. I've had several houses over a 26 year period and not one of them has had plaster on walls or ceiling. It's just not usual for timber framed buldings here.

Edit: link to an interesting build where the owner was also a little surprised about the plastering thing, lol. This house isn't a million miles away from me...although my house is embarrassingly poor compared to his. :D

"First up.. let's sort out what ames tapers do: "Ames tapers stick tape to the surfaces of walls and ceilings. This seals the joints between sheets of plasterboard, leaving a seamless finish ready for decoration. Ames tapers are sometimes called Drywall or Dryline finishers"
My thanks to 'Plan It DIY' for helping us through that.
For some reason in Scotland, nobody plasters the whole wall.. they ames tape. Fair enough.
