I'd buy second hand. Whilst new is tempting, you have to consider that what you save in warranties and MOT's will be wiped out tenfold by the interest on the finance and the depreciation. £1500 buys you a decent 7-10 year old motor nowadays.0

I agree with Conor, go for second - hand car, if you choose either German or better still Japanese, you will not go far wrong.
Just get someone that knows a bit about cars to advise you further.;)0 -
thing is with an old car, its just the luck of the draw, could last for years and not have any problems, but could pay £1500 and 6months down the line could have a major problem and spending 1000 + to fix it..
bit of a gamble0 -
Well I never pay more than £2000 for my cars, always buy Japanese,( Honda / Nissan ) never once had anything go wrong with any of them.
Life's a gamble...
At least the most you can lose is the price you paid for the car, with a new one, you will lose about 20% of it's value as you drive away in it.
Fine if you can afford to blow money away like that.
Anyway, your money, your call.;)
Good luck.0 -
Not at all stockbroke. If you spend £1000 on a car and have £1000 in a car repair/next car fund, you'll never be off the road. Most things do not cost £1000 to sort anyway, usually a couple hundred at most. Problem comes if things happen all at once, like cylinder head cracks, head gasket gone, clutch gone.
You won't be looking at a car like mine, but most people would tend to think it's a worthless heap that wouldn't go anywhere. I got a 94 Skoda Favorit with 110k miles on the clock (bear in mind the clock was broken and didn't always add miles on). Got it free as owner was considering scrapping it. Had it a year and a few months. First MOT, needed centre exhaust, handbrake adjustment and a brake pipe. Second MOT just needed a brake pipe. Other than that has needed rear wheel bearings replaced, some tyres (which any car would need) but more annoyingly as the alloy wheels are old they have a tendancy to leak at the rim costing £15 for a rim re-seal. This is all pretty much nothing really, nothing serious there. However I have been given an advisory notice for last MOT that the steering rack is worn at offside and track rod ends need renewing. Steering rack part price £100, track rod ends price £8 each side. A garage would charge a bomb to replace them I imagine, but I'd probably give it a go myself.
The car happily does 220 mile long journeys getting over 45mpg driven sensibly. I imagine most people would think it would breakdown but it has never broken down once.
Get yourself a knowledgeable person to look over the car, or get an independent inspection, like AA or RAC etc. Look for a car that's been looked after, full service history helps. But even taking these precautions things can still happen, but at least you'll know you're not being sold a complete lemon from the offset.0 -
yeh i agree
around 1500 will buy u a decent enough car, but do your research0
