With the bad press at the moment

Do you read the Daily Express ??

In my opinion investing in Equities is as safe now as it has ever been, and ever will be.

No financial advisers recommend terms of less than 5 years anyway. Its become an automatic statement in the same way as "you could get back less than you pay in" has.

However, the people giving advice to the OP to invest in stocks and shares do not state this, despite the fact that this is only the OP's third posting to this forum, and that he (or she) calls itself 'Financial Virgin'. That's why I thought I would add this. :D

chris1, have a look at the list I gave for some examples of ways to avoid stocks and shares in a stocks and shares ISA. The BlackRock UK Absolute Alpha fund uses stocks and shares but among other things buys some to go up and bets that companies in a similar business will drop, so it can make money whichever way the market goes.

The Cru Investment Portfolio avoids almost all of the stock market, using things like companies selling the revenue from their sales to get paid early, private equity and other approaches.

Invesco Perpetual Monthly Income Plus has lots of bond content and relatively little in shares.

Then there are Invesco Perpetual Income and Neptune Global Equity, one mainly in the UK, one the rest of the world.

xiox, my own property deposit money isn't staying mostly in cash, it's exploiting alternatives like these.
