Anyway, here's the story. Toys R Us were doing an offer on their Bruin toys, buy one get another half price. I got a couple of toys, one at £12.99 and one at £9.99, so paid £5 for the the £9.99 toy. I was in a bit of a rush when buying the toys, and when I got home and checked the £12.99 toy I noticed it had a part that was quite small. My son is 11 months old and the toy was for 12 months. I'd planned to give him it for an extra birthday pressie, but I don't think he'll be out of the everything in mouth stage by then!
I'd seen something else for the same price (£12.99) when I bought the toys so wanted to do a swap. As I'd got a toy for half price the CS woman wasn't quite sure how to do it so called the manager over the phone. She was told that I could only have a refund of £7.99. I pointed out that I might not have bought any of the toys had I not got them on offer.
CS then said that she might be able to do it by charging me for the other toy then giving me a refund. I didn't want to do this as I didn't want money going out of my bank account and taking a while to go back in, so just agreed to the £7.99 as ds was getting a bit ratty by the this time. I gave my card and was refunded the money. I then put my card away, was about to go when I decided I wasn't happy and asked to speak to the manager.
He came over and said they could do it by doing a credit note for the items. I said ok, so went to pick the toy, along with a couple of extra ones that came up to just under £6. I went through a normal till, was credited for the exchanged toy so didn't have to pay anything for it. At no point did they take my card to get their £7.99 back. I've checked my balance and it's not gone in, so I'm wondering, can someone once you've put your card details in, got a reciept for the refund and all the rest of it, cancel a refund transaction without the customers knowledge?

There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

Your refund receipt proves the transaction and should show on your statement. Unless the shop 'reversed' the transaction just after. Usually this would be done in the customers presence and a new receipt issued.
Otherwise the only way to get the money back from you would appear on your statement i think. It would go through as a 'customer not present' sale so no need for your pin. The shop's copy of the receipt would probably have your full card number on it, only the customer copy of the receipt has most of the numbers obscured.
I would guess they reversed it knowing you were going to the till to exchange the goods for the value, but as it happens i think you are owed £1.99 if that's the case and the agreed exchange amount was for £7.99 and you only went for approx £6 worth of toys?
