Tiling Quote

Got the first quote to tile our kitchen today,

Walls - 3m2 £195 - 2 days.
Floor - 9m2 £235 - 2 days.

Price includes adhesive, grout and sealing.

I live in Central Scotland if that makes a difference.

Walls seem totally excessive to me. Labour wise it's around £15-£20 psm (mosaics being dearer again). The adhesive and grout should come to no more then £20 for that area. I am puzzled by the "sealing". What is that? If if is using PVA to seal the loose plaster underneath then that is a 5 minute job - that you could easily do yourself in 10 mins. The tiling should take no more than an absolute max of 1 day in a kitchen for that amount. Even if he spent half of day 1 on the tiling, and half of day two on the grouting, it still seems dear to me an I wouldnt let my tiling contractor charge me that much.

Floor, seems a tad dear but possibly not far off.

The tiles being fitted may require sealing after laying.

If he's using PVA to seal loose plaster then DON'T use him. :rotfl:

If he's using PVA to seal sound plaster ask him if he's sure and wouldn't he rather use an acrylic primer.

Wall price seems VEERRY high but we don't know if it's complicated and there are lots and lots of difficult cutting to do. Even so it seems at leasta factor of 2 out.

Yes - agree floor price is about right.

    cheers guys

I want the floor tiles sealed as we have dogs, the tiles will be white with white grout.

For the wall tiles , i had the walls plastered but put 2 coats of paint on before i found out that it was a bad idea if i was going to tile, he said he would score the wall and seal with pva.

here is a few pics to give you an idea.

Here is the floor area, tiles will be under the fridge, washing machine and dish washer, also getting the cupboard tiled which is about 1m2

  • Yes - walls price is way over the top. It's not that difficult. So it's painted first which he's going to just scratch and then PVA huh? On his head be it then.

Are you sure that floor is 9m2?

If it were me I'd get another man in to quote frankly.

including underneath the appliances and in the cupboard it was just under it, the 9m2 includes the extra that you put just in case you need it.

we do plan to get in some more guys for quotes, we got this guy in first because he just did our friends kitchen and did a good job, i would say there kitchen was bigger than ours and he charged them £300 for walls and floor, we thought ours would be ruffly the same.

we priced up the tiles today, £160 for the floor and £60 for the walls, with that quote that's £650 all in , which for such a small kitchen is a tad over the top i would think.

Roseberry, I am abit puzzled. It's surely traditional to use PVA (unibond) to seal a wall. Indeed I have a tub of Granafix adhesive here in my store, and it that is the method they actually reccomend, certainly it is what both my tiling contractors do.

The only tubbed Granfix I use is Multifix and that's self priming anyway.

What concerns me is that he is proposing to tile over emulsion paint which he doesn't know how well is adhered to the plaster (if it's Rich Matt it won't be at all) and then stick PVA on it which won't stick to the paint anyway.

So weight of tiles, adhesive and grout only held up by a layer of paint which won't be fully attached to the PVA once the moisture in the adhesive has made it go partially live again. Good job there's no room i this job for large format tiles 'cos I predict they'd fall off! He might get away with it with small tiles but frankly I wouldn't take the risk.

  • Hi Guys,
Just excited by this new company that has really got it organised when it comes to glass mosaic tile.

check out: Glass Tiles or Glass Mosaic at www.binibi.co.uk

They got very reasonably priced tiles but most importantly CHOICE!!!. They have a great sample service which is free and amazingly 24hr delivery via parcelforce.

I just love the layout and hi res images and ordered for my shower.

    Hope this helps
