CTB, HB and Private Pension

Hi

Can anyone help me with this.

Mother in law and husband get full pension credit at £189 a week. Also get rent and council tax paid for.

Her husband will shortly be getting his works pension through as he is now 60. They have given him a guess-timate of around £5k pa.

I tried that Entitled to thing but it would appear they will have to pay a fiar portion of council tax and rent when the private pension comes through and it would appear they won't be that much better off.

Does this sound right? Seems rather pointless paying into a private pension if this is the case.

Thanks for any advice!

The Private pension (£96 pw?) will reduce their pension credit by that much £189 - £96 = £93. As long as they are still receiving some Pension Credit they should be entitled to full Housing and Council Tax Benefit.

Ok I see. What qualifies them for pension credit?

To qualify for PC a claimant or their partner must be at least 60 and have income of less than £189 pw. The £189 is what government sets as law to be the min. amount that a couple in their 60's should live on therefore whenever income is less than £189pw it will be topped up to £189 by Pension Credit. Any other money coming in (eg private pension)will be deducted from the £189 but as long as they are still entitled to the benefit (by even a £1) they will qaulify for full housing and council tax benefit
