Abbey - 3 Year Olds Interest taxed

Options
When my daughter was born I set up a bank account with Abbey National and filled in the relevant form to pay no tax on the interest (I am an mse’r). After a year I got notice that she had been awarded x amount of interest with x amount of tax taken. I went to the Abbey National filled in the form again, the lady could not get the info. to go through but promised she would sort it out that afternoon and recommended I went through the government to retrieve the tax paid. This year I again received a statement and another £15 was taken as tax. I went to Abbey this morning with the letter received last year with the customer service reps name etc. and asked why this non taxable info. had not been set up.

The teller said this had happened to a number of people and I should fill in the form again and go through the government for a refund.

Its not an awful lot of money although I guess it is to a three year old but why should I chase it when I have done everything I was supposed to do correctly. Makes you wonder about the safety of your money if they are this lapsidazical about their responsibilities. I’m really annoyed at their incompetence. Should I complain?

    Yes, you should complain.
Imprudent granting of credit is bound to prove just as ruinous to a bank as to any other merchant.

Perhaps its a regional variation of "lackadaisical".
Probably better than the original, with its hints of 'lapses' and 'daze'.
After too much watching of "The Night Garden", I would expect "Upsydaisical" to enter the language before too long ... ;)

With the Halifax, you are not required to fill in a R85 form. They register your account for gross interest at the counter instantly. They just ask you for a few details, no forms to fill in or sign.

Also, I just opened a Birmingham Midshires (part of Halifax) internet a/c and it lets you register for gross interest online without having to fill in an R85 form.

I hate filling in R85s because it's a bit hit or miss. After four attempts at registering my Nationwide Bond without success, I went a bit mad and sent them 6 x R85 forms for the same account!

Now, whenever I register an account for gross interest, I always email them after 3-4 weeks for confirmation that the account has been registered.
  • I'm going to claim its a regional variation of "lackadaisical" and not admit to being a terrible speller of big words (hides red face) I would put embarrassed but I'm not sure how to spell it.

Anyway having a 3 year old I'm with Meltdown's post and from now on will use "Upsydaisical"

Thanks for the help I wasn't sure if I was right to fume.

I have been in touch with Abbey's complaints department by phone, who after almost a week have came back to say they are posting out another R85 form and have suggested that I should go through the Government to reclaim the tax which they caused to be mistakenly taken from my daughter.

I am fuming - their mistake which is widespread and lasted for nearly three years and they want me to fix it and take a chance on applying for no tax yet again, what do I do now, I want them to take responsibility.

Formal complaint (you don't do it by 'phone .. or you will get nowhere) .. send it Recorded. Brief history of the problem ... and enclose the R85. Ask for a written response to the effect that it has been set up .... and £nn to be added to your daughter's account as compensation for repetitive and unprofessional errors?

Just to update - I sent a formal letter of complaint and after a lot of faffing about and very little communication from Abbey I received compensation of £30.00 followed two days later by a letter telling me that they hadn't come to a decision about my complaint and that I could complain to the ombudsman. I am not at all impressed by Abbey in this matter seems like one hand doesn't know what the other is doing.

I'm glad I pursued it though as they shouldn't get away with such bad practice.

    thanks to all
