Lidl - rotting meat!!

So, if you happened to buy some "fresh" chicken at Lidls, and its Use By date was still a week off but you opened it to use it right away...... and it was rotten..... you'd take it back to the store, right? But what if the next batch was exactly the same?! I've had 2 meals ruined because I opened up the chicken packs and got a horrible whiff of rotting meat - and both said they were good for another week! Absolutely disgusting!!! I couldn't even be bothered to take back the 2nd pack as it would have stunk the house up too much overnight!

Next time freeze it, call the store and then take it back the next day!

I'd get onto trading standards - that's dangerous! Years ago my Dad took back the Xmas turkey to ASDA for the same reason, he got £5 compensation when he complained of the severe inconvenience in addition to a refund. Soon after they were prosecuted for selling one of the same batch and claimed in court they hadn't any other problems with them and got a small fine.

Peoples health and potentially lives are at risk.

Take it back and get THEM to open a pack in the store.

Having said that, chicken well within its sell by date will generally be OK to eat. We always take the skin off anyway (the stink is normally in the skin) and when cooked it is fine. It's a form of bug which is destroyed by cooking - very unpleasant but the chicken is OK.

My DH loves chicken - he is really fussy but understands about contamination and will eat smelly chicken if very fresh and well cooked. Personally I am happy to eat something else! :o

report it to environmental health - they'll take action against the store. I have no sense of smell so anything like this is dangerous - in the past I've started cooking 'smelly' chicken only to be warned by the children that it was stinking the kitchen out!

Sell-by/ use-by dates are extremely cautious and meat doesn't become rotten the very next day, if stored correctly. Having said that, I once bought two packs of chicken from Lidl. I used one on its use-by date and it was fine. The next day I decided to freeze the other pack, but as I was putting it in the freezer I noticed it looked a funny colour. When I opened the pack the smell was unbelievable and my kids in the other room complained about it.
As it was out of date I didn't bother taking it back as I'd have got nowhere and wouldn't have been able to prove I'd kept it refridgerated anyway.
In general, I am very happy with the quality of food from Lidl.

They won't, if the stores due diligence records are all fine.

Why do people always think reporting something is gaurenteed to mean to person/store your reporting will get in trouble? If Environmental Health go there and all is ok nothing will happen.

Surely not if there were enough complaints, tim. Also if env health were to open one in store and found it to be off. I have had similar problems with Asda mince.

I spoke to the manager today, and she admitted that someone else had just brought back their chicken for the same reason, and thanked me for letting them know.... no refund though because I hadn't brought the receipt. Nevermind, I won't be bothering to buy meat there anymore because that is just too disgusting. :lipsrseal

I've never heard that about smelly chicken being safe after cooking and TBH I wouldn't risk it.... surely that is what our sense of smell is for, to warn us about rotten food!
