Most charity shops will take what is classed as Rags (unsaleable clothes etc). As they get sold on to textile recyclers therefore generating income for the charity.

I work for the BHF. I am a shop manager. Yes we do get money for your not so saleable clothing, bedding, and other textiles, we also get money for shoes. But IT WOULD BE A BIG HELP IF WHEN YOU ARE DONTATING YOU POINT OUT THAT THE BAGS ARE RAGS, then we will only have to weigh them and not waste our time sorting them. You would not believe the undesirable things that we have to sort through a lot of the time. If it was labelled that it was only fit for the rag bin, it would be an advantage.
Are you also aware that if you are a tax payer, if you GIFT AID, salable items, we can claim back 28p in the pound from the government.
So if you have things that we can sell it helps us if you can gift aid. This is done by the PDSA and Sue Ryder I am not sure which other charity shops do it yet.? Worth thinking about. You can gift aid to any and all of the charities if you are a tax payer, and it doesnt cost you anything but its worth a lot to us at the charities.

I also work for a charity and some people arrive with maybe about 10 bags of stuff and it is all crap. They are just dumping all their unwanted rubbish on us instead of taking it to the dump. I pity the staff who have to open the bags, I have seen some unbelievable items over the years.

Mostly the sorting is done by the manager and assistant, but some volunteers do do it in some shops. The things are not always "in a good and clean saleable condition". Dirty underwear is common. Urine covered mens trousers are also a big cringe factor. Just to name a few things. Since the country has tried to campaign for Recycle, then yes we get more and more "crap" then you could imagine. Not only with clothes, broken toys, chipped bricka brac. Torn books. We unfortunately fill several large bins of this kind of thing, which of course we have to pay for out of our takings. So It would be nice if one day people thought about what they are donating!. Meanwhile I wash my hands regularily and try to wear surgical gloves when in doubt. !!

I had no idea things are so bad. Couldn't you make them sign a release?
