Do you specifically need a laptop?
As you know, 3dsmax is a taxing program on both processor and graphics cards. Laptops have mobile cpu's and gfx in them which run at slower speeds and have less memory to improve battery life and keep heat to a minimum.
For that budget you could build a good, fast desktop with a nice screen which will be more suited to what you want to do.0 -
Product code 685078 on their website.
You can get a better spec system from Dell for that money.
Also be-alright is correct. You could build a good desktop for that money.0 -
im in need of a laptop because i need to take things to university. I have to admit too that i cant use a mouse when im using unreal editor so a touchpad is alot better.
I also dont have the room to have a desktop, but i have thought about purchasing one but all factors seem to point to a laptop.I'm getting married in August 2015:j0 -
Dell Vostro 1500
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4ghz
3072mb RAM
Windows Vista Home Premium
15.4" 1440 x 900 Screen (better resolution than the standard Dell screen)
2mp Integrated Webcam
250GB HDD
256mb nVidia 8600GT
6 cell battery
1 Yr Basic Next Business Day Warranty
LAN and Wireless a/b/g
Yours for around £650 including VAT and postage. Slightly over budget, but an excellent specification for the price. and a fairly good graphics card for the work you want to do.0 -
Another Sony here. £605. Has 128mb graphics. Not as good as the Dell above: -

That's quite a shame, at least with a desktop you can upgrade parts as you go on to keep up with technology, with a laptop you're really limited.
Do you know what other programs you'll be needing to use, Lightwave & Maya?0 -

This one sounds brilliant! Ill see if i can get it any cheaper though as £650 is really the top end of my budget.
Im running programs such as adobe, 3dmax 9, macromedia suite 8, unreal editor and microsoft office 2007. It needs to be something that helps me make the most out of my work, being a designer etc.
I really need something that i can take around with me, but would it be a good idea to have a desktop with a portable hard drive?I'm getting married in August 2015:j0 -

If you reduced the screen to the basic one and removed Bluetooth, you could get it for around the £600 mark.
A desktop does mean you can upgrade, but to be honest reasonable desktop PC's are so cheap these days that after a few years it's usually more costly upgrading than compared with just buying a new one. This does of course depend on what you buy.0
