yes, it should work with no problems.

Did you realise that you don't even have to be buying any nappies to use a branded coupon in Tescos? e.g say you have a coupon for pampers and nescafe , you can do your tescos shop which may not include any nappies or any coffee but you can still use the coupons at the till or at the self service one.

I have been getting £6.15 off every tesco shop for months now using various coupons and I certainly don't buy the items.
If i'm at a usual till i just hand these over and say "can you see if these scan please" - if there are any that don't work for some reason they just hand them back.

if you are using the self service tills and you use coupons it often comes up "seek assistance". this is because when you put the coupon inside the machine it iften doesn't go all the way in so an assistant has to push it down for you.

I've never had any problems and have saved lots off my shopping.
Here's a link (if it works) to a £4 off voucher that works for me in Tescos everytime (even if it is out of date although I do try and get the right one each month) http://img.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2008/04_01/sebastian_faulks_voucher_405x620.gif

Thats really good advice Zebedy :)

However, I wouldn't advise using printed ones if you are new to this as not all Tescos will accept them and the resulting knockback might put a newbie off for life!

Best bet is to read the magazine thread on a daily basis as this lets you know when a coupon is available in a magazine, these are usually non store specific so can be used in most supermarkets. There is one at the moment for 90p in Grazia magazine, although it does cost 1.00 to buy but if you are buying it with low value money off coupons that are near their use by date, then it can work out quite well.

Another alternative is to read the newspaper thread on a daily basis as these often have quite high value ones in, (usually in the Daily Mail) such as the Marie Claire one which was available a few weeks back and was for 2.10 off your shopping.

Happy shopping Eden and welcome to the coupon club :D

If you have a Tesco's own coupon you will have to buy the product it is for, for the coupon to scan IYSWIM. Ofcourse there are exceptions, the Mums Choice coupons for instance :D . You can use both of the nappy 100 pointers when buying 1 packet of Tesco Newborn nappies which only costs £1.64. Much cheaper than Pampers/Huggies.

There is a wealth of information on both MSE and PTS (PaidToShop). Have a read and come back with any questions ;) .

OK here's some info to start you off, do pm me with any other Qs (except Boots) as I am a mine of information about using coupons at Tesco, lol!

Coupons with a barcode that start with 9 9 should scan in any Supermarket, but don't try to use store-specific ones with a Supermarket logo on, or with a single retailer named (like Superdrug or whatever). Many of these will scan but it's a complete no-no, as they can't reclaim the money.

The only exception to this is that Tesco will accept other stores' Spend & Save vouchers (also known as conditional spend coupons). These are ones like Sainsburys 'save £3 when you spend £30' but only if NO PRODUCT OR RANGE is stated (hence a Sainsburys '£3 off when you spend £30 on electricals/clothing' is NOT OK).

Also none of the following stores are named as accepting the £4 Daily Mail Book token mentioned above so I really wouldn't bother with it. Tesco may take it against the book (but they can't redeem it for money back, it's purely a loss-leader to them as they already discount the book to half price and National Book tokens know this). Without buying the book I was never surprised when my local Tesco said no - can't blame them for declining a dud £4 note really - so I no longer use that one.

Only the following 3 stores will officially allow coupon-use without buying the product:

Asda - most stores will accept some general money off coupons (MOCs), but often they like to restrict you to 10% which isn't great if you have a nice lot of coupons. The policy is down to the individual Store Manager and is often more restrictive on the self-scan than at the till.

Waitrose - if you have one near you, also accept some coupons without buying the product (even their own Waitrose coupons from their magazine, I understand!). That policy is down to the Store manager; some will allow 3 coupons, some any amount and duplicates are OK there too. Good for using up close-to-expiry duplicates. But not everyone has a Waitrose near them and it can be more expensive (not always though, e.g. Robinsons squash 3L bottles were on offer there at £2 each at the weekend, compared to Tesco where they are £2.50 odd).

Tesco - their policy is supposed to be followed by all stores (but it's not). The policy is you can use one of each product coupon to any total amount off your shopping, no duplicates unless you buy the same amount of that product.

But - in any store but particularly Tesco - I wouldn't use the self-scan when using coupons (unless you only have one or two). SS Supervisors are usually primed to check for coupon-abuse at the SS in particular and you'll feel like a criminal if they start pulling your coupons back out of the slot and telling you to use only one in future!

Always go to a manned till, choose a friendly YOUNG face and if you are struck dumb with terror the first time, offer the coupons with a smile when you hand over your clubcard. No need to say anything but if you can manage it say, 'can you scan any of my coupons please?' At a manned till in Tesco they 'should' follow the right policy and be less restrictive than at the self-scan. If they don't know they may call a Supervisor but don't faint, you are doing nothing wrong in using coupons this way and the Supervisor should OK it if all your coupons are different. They may need to check all the dates on each, though.

But you won't know about your store until you try a few cashiers (don't give up if the first one is a moo, save the coupons for another time/another cashier).

P.S. Have a look at the 'printable coupons' thread and try a small one next time (not at Asda though, they are rubbish with printables and think they are all photocopies!). If your Tesco store is OK with printables, get on Couponnet and print off all the coupons on there, you can print most of them twice.

    Hi CouponMad !
    Thanks for your useful advice.
I just wondered if it was worth persevering with coupons at a Tesco Metro (one of the smaller types of Tescos, although bigger than an Express). I have been repeatedly turned down when trying to use couponnet coupons at this particular store. Is it because, being a smaller store than a Tesco Extra, they don't stock the items or are they being awkward for the sake of it ?
Basically, I'm wondering if it's a Tesco Extra store you all use on here for your coupons ?
Although, I have also been repeatedly turned down with couponnet coupons at an average sized Tesco too.
    Thanks icon7.gif

    Hi Jelly Tots!

I think mostly it is about whether the store knows the policy and has communicated it to the staff properly.

When I read that the coupon policy had been confirmed in an update to all Tesco stores last Summer, I went in to my local stores and asked...and asked...and asked again until they listened to me!

My main success was in an Extra where they have a lot of staff and one Till Supervisor had read the update I knew about. She told some of the other staff, then I kept returning and mentioning her name if coupons were refused. Gradually the message got through and luckily there appeared to be no objection from Store Management, although one or two used to give me funny looks when called to check the dates on my coupons. They asked me where I got them all from, I think they thought I had robbed a mailbag or something! :rotfl:

Another success was in a Metro, funnily enough. I had asked at CS twice, and a manager said he would look into it for me. He was as good as his word and said 'yes, as long as there are no duplicates, you can use them all' next time I popped in there. Sadly since then there have been some staff changes and misinformation about the policy, so now I don't bother with them as I have other stores who are OK with it now. But it shows that Metro stores can play ball if you persevere!

Finally I have had some success in two middle-sized stores as well although these have both had some real harridans of Till Managers to overcome. Again, this involved raising my profile and asking up front at the CS desk and speaking to Managers more than once. Even now, some of the worst staff there still try to lie about it and make up a policy - but I always stand my ground and name-drop the Managers who have cleared it for me before.

So, my advice would be to go to CS in that Metro (even if it's a ciggie kiosk as it is in my local Metro). Pick your moment carefully, when they are not too busy, and when you have time for a debate(!) with Management and when you are feeling confident & assertive. Finally, have the policy clear in your own mind and state it confidently, maybe say you 'know someone who works at xxxx store who showed you a copy of the Tesco national coupon policy and it's one of each coupon, etc.'

Don't be fobbed off by the first person you see, don't ask them what the policy is, instead tell them you know the policy and wonder why it's not being followed in that store, as other Metros do? That normally sends them rushing for a Manager, which is what you want.

And have some Couponnet ones in your hand as an example of your coupons you use 'in other Tesco stores'. Very useful to help educate those members of staff who think they are photocopies, usually you will find one person who knows what they really are, which helps.
