My girlfriend dropped her laptop-not very hard but since then the screen has gone blank, has anyone else experienced this and is it easy to repair.

Two things could have happened...
The screen broke completely and has to be replaced
or
The cable that connects the screen to the graphics chip on the mainboard has come loose.
the second method can be resolved if you are confident enough to open up your laptop completely and have a look inside.
Post your make and model and ill see if there is a guide for it anywhere.Scrimping and saving!0 -
thanks bud im at work but its a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo 7400 I think it was £399.99 got it December 2006 from Staples, good machine.0

Did you buy insurance with it? In which case, it might still be running and cover accidental damage.0

just to determine some things would you be able to test it with another monitor?
the laptop should have a VGA port and will auto recognise the external screen.
let me know the result anytime after you get home.Scrimping and saving!0 -
I volunteer for a charity refurbishing laptops we had some amilo laptops come in 6 months ago water damaged its not that hard to open them up.
is it in warranty? if yes get them to fix it.
if no plug into an external monitor as described above.
If you are confident usualy under the top part of the keyboard the screen plugs into the motherboard if you able to remove the keyboard it should be easy to make sure this is seated correctly.
You dont mention if the laptop turns on does it work at all? When using the housing forum please use the sticky threads for valuable information.0 -
it turns on all lights go on and i can hear the hard drive, thinking about it it seems as though the screen cable must of come loose, i will open it up tonight, im quite experienced with desktops is it quite easy?0

Dont know if you got this working yet? its the most likely fault yes and its not that hard to get a keyboard out. often you can find some repair guides for your make of laptop if you google but generally you remove screws from the under side of the laptop pop of the plastic part just above the keyboard and slide the keyboard up and it should come out. But it all depends on your make/model.
The screen problem could also be a problem with the inverter which is located behind the screen or well the backlight in the screen might have broken in which case you need a new screen.
