Can I claim?

I've got a few months left before my baby arrives. Having worked the majority of my life (so far) and not being entitled to SMP I have put in a claim for Maternity Allowance.
My question is as I am currently not working (contract recently ended) but actively looking would I be entitled to claim anything such as JSA prior to MA starting?
I am completely new to benefits and would rather work than claim anything but I feel time is running out quickly and that pregnant is hindering my chances of getting an 'in-between' job. Also is it possible to get back pay for the weeks where I've not been able to find work?
Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the site,
If you still wish to work you should be able to claim JObseekers Allowance, either contribution based or income based. Contact your local Jobcentre to find out more.
You dont mention whether you have a partner or not as this may hinder some benefits if you have a partner and he has a job.

They will start your MA as soon as possible (depending on how many weeks you are). So you won't need to claim JSA.
Remember to claim the sure start £500 when your tax credit claim come through when the baby s born. I missed out as I didn't realise I would qualify as my partner was working!
Best of luck with the baba xxxYou're my wife now Dave.......0 -
Yes you can claim JSA now. But i wouldnt have thought it would be back dated but ask them.If you were sick because of the pregnancy you could claim income support or incapacity benefit now.The Maternity Allowance will be payable from the 11th week before the expected week of birth.0
