i have just turned on my pc and i just get on to the first start up screen where it says the pc make, and it stops and i get a high pitched beeping noise, and it does not do anything else. The pc is nearly 5 yrs old so i dont think its worth a repair, any quick fixes or is it dead?

    One beep? More? Continuous?

These beeps mean something as it's the results of the POST (Power On Self Test). Information about the beeps will help us diagnose the problem. It may well be fixable ...

Sorry - it that one beep, repeated three times

    One continuous beep

Or one beep, repeated three times immediately followed by a fourth continuous beep

Sorry to be a pain, but it's important

These beeps should be described in the motherboard manual.
I'd vote for memory or graphic card fault. Take them out, blow any dust off, put them back, and try again.
If you recently moved the PC, I'd favour the graphic card not sitting properly in its slot.

Have a look here, see if you can match your BIOS to the makes shown, and the beep code you hear
    http://www.amptron.com/html/bios.beepcodes.html
I had a single short continuously repeated beep recently, but my screen told me my CPU fan was running too slow, and that was as far as the boot sequence would go. I could override by pressing F1. I replaced the fan on the CPU, but the problem continued. I monitored the CPU temperature, and it stayed within safe limits, over many hours of use, so I just routinely hit F1 thereafter when booting. Try doing as recommended by other posters above.
Just a note, I have since replaced that computer for other reasons, not connected to that problem (too low spec in every way).

well thats about the worst thing you can do to a processor. The static created by the hose and dust fibres going up the tube are lethal to electronics. If you want to do this keep the end of the hose well away from the motherboard and use a small brush or air duster, to loosen the dust first and then carried away by the air stream.
