OU students? Could someone clarify this for me?

About to start a You and Your money course with the OU. This morning I recieved a letter saying we'd been accepted onto the personal computer and internet grant scheme.... this is the jist of what the letter says.
Your grant of £390 will be paid into your bank account....
*yadda yadda yadda*
.... the grant will go into the same bank account as your Course grant, paid by the Student loans company....
*yadda yadda yadda*
.... you can expect to recieve your grant within 10 working days of receipt of this letter. The grant will show as a payment from the Open University.

In addition to your grant from the personal computer and internet scheme you will shortly be recieving your course grant (of up to £250) from the SLC that you should use with £250 of the grant (Giving you up to £500) to purchase a computer and £140 of the grant to assist with your internet access costs. Your course grant will show as a payment from the Student Loans Company.

Does that mean we'll be getting £390 plus another £250? Or just £390 for thew computer? Do we have to buy a computer with all of it? Does the £250 have to be for a computer as well????? I'm confused! lol!

    Hiya!

Yes you get the £390 + £250 and can use all of it if you wish, but you need to use at least the £390 given to you for the computer and send the recipt to them directly at the OU. Make sure you keep a copy of the recipt for your own records.

The other £250 is a grant towards all the bits and bobs you may need for the course, but if you wish to use it towards getting a better computer or laptop, then thats fine too.

    Enjoy your course.

Or childcare, transport to tutorials (maybe you have one/two in Birmaingham), software (http://www.theultimatesteal.co.uk/ - includes access, once you get your OU email address (Ste are you listening - "Death Warrior Muppets 3" isn't software she needs), remember it's a one off so this is money to facilitate you doing the course for the whole year... the revision schools are probably £250 so if you wanted to go to one that would eat the money....

and if you do end up lending it to the Telly fund please regard it as a loan.... and make the telly refund you if needed ;)

Make sure your tutor knows your situations, the jobs, the kiddie issues, the CAB, your life, how long since you studied, issues with learning you have etc so they can judge how to support you....

I think it's £250 of the £390 for a computer, the rest for internet fees, and the other £250 for course costs/whatever. At least, I'm sure it was when I applied!

I reckon your morally obliged to spend it on *yourself* and making sure you get the most out of the course and make doing the course go as smoothly as possible, and not let the because-i'm-not-worth-it-can-only-use-money-for-kids-etc-demons get near it.... this is for *you* and your future....
be that an extra days childcare so you get a day off to study in peace/some just you-Ste time...

    Let me check my understanding...

£250 computer grant - has to be spent on new computer/laptop.
£140 internet grant - to reimburse our internet costs... can be spent on....whatever?
£250 course grant - misc course costs, books etc. Can be spent on whatever?
