How did you apply for the computer grant? I really need a better computer to do my course properly, and a grant for one would really help.

Is the money from the SLC an actual grant - or a loan?

They're both grants. The personal computer and internet access grant one just appeared in the post so it seems they applied on my behalf when I was awarded the financial support.

    Hi IA,

I think I can help - I recieved financial funding from the OU last year, similar to what you have received (apart from I'd just bought a laptop from Dell 2 weeks before they told me I could have a grant  ).

The £250 from the SLC is £250 for you - and is a non repayable grant. Personally, I recieved it 2 days after a nasty op, so I think I spent £10 in woolworths buying some stationary, and spent the rest on me :D

  • Hi there, just to clarify for you. My husband recently received this, £250 - towards the cost of a laptop/computer or peripherals (printer, etc) £140 on internet access, for both of these receipts must be provided to the OU and the final £250 is for whatever - intended for anything extra you need for the course.

    Hope this helpsx

When you apply for financial support for course fees, you're automatically assessed to see whether you can get the £250 course grant. If you can get that, they then send you a letter to apply for the computer and internet grants.

That's strange, I got the £250 but didn't get any other forms. It might be because I'm entitled to Disabled Students Allowance, so could get a computer from that which comes out of a different pot and so there'd be more money for other students.

Yeah, you can't get DSA and the computer allowance.

    Hi Everyone,

I know this is a little off thread but I recently logged on to my OU account and came accorss the news item I have copied below.

Basically, if you are an OU Student you can get an absolute raft of free software from Microsoft. To see this for yourself log on to your OU account, go to your student homepage and it should be in the messages section.

    Best Regards
