Need a sturdy laptop

I have an Advent laptop which I have had for about 18 months, in the last 2 months (out of warranty!) where the power supply goes in to the computer has become lose (i.e. the internal connection) so the computer sometimes charges sometimes doesn't. This broke completely. It got fixed, but the same thing is happening again. The power supply has also needed replacing and the clasp keeping it shut has broke. The laptop itself has been fine - don't need anything flash just the basics.
The laptop does get some abuse, but I am going to be starting teacher training soon, so it will be getting even more abuse. I would like to buy a really robust laptop, which can take being moved about and constantly plugging and unplugged.
Not sure how much I need to spend for this. Can spend upto 1000 but would prefer somethng closer to the 600 but only if it will do the job.
Can anyone recomend a "built to last" laptop??
Thanks
