  • Beg & borrow from family and friends you'd be surprised what they'll lend. We had nothing for about 6 weeks when we came back from Oz and got loads of stuff that people had knocking around that they didn't want anymore and got everything from duvet covers to kitchen equipment, we were also lent amongst other things a car and beds to sleep on. One friend even gave us their 3 piece suite when their new one arrived. We've still got it now as it was better than our old one!

Try free to collector adds in local papers/shops too.

I don't know where you're based, but there are a number of charities that have warehouses of donated furniture for sale, often very cheaply:
    http://www.furniturenow.org.uk/index.html
    http://www.morphcamberwell.org.uk/Default.aspx
    http://www.scratchcharity.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=41&Itemid=57

The good thing about this is you can donate it back when you're finished with it, provided it's still in good condition, so the charity gets the sale price again, and it still works out cheaper than hiring/buying new furniture!

For larger items I would suggest using:

    localbargainfinder.co.uk

If you type in your postcode it will bring up all the "collection only" items within 10 miles of you that are on ebay. As an example, near me ending today and currently selling are:

    King size bed £26
    Table & 4 chairs £5
    microwave £10.50
    Ikea day bed £5.51

    Happy shopping!

You haven't said where you are in the country - is there a local auction house? Ours is really cheap. If you do manage to get on freecycle, just post one "wanted" explaining what's happened, i'm sure you'll get loads of stuff.

If you need everything quickly - Ikea does some value packs of "starter" goods. Check their website www.ikea.co.uk
