My DH says salt kills them - we had them on our doorstep from neighbours bin YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:j Where there is a will there is a way - there is a way and I will find it :j0

Excellent - I'll try it - mixed with the bleach it might have an extra kick.
Thank God the bins at the end of the garden and not near the house! They make me shudder!
I'd never have thought that could happen with just 1 missed bin collection, especially with everything wrapped in bin bags! Eugh!
Thanks very much for the tip - am off to try it now!

Thanks very much, this is all very helpful ..... we're on the fortnightly collections too, never had a problem til now though.
Anyhow, off to boil some water now too! I'll just try everything - one of them will work hopefully! lol
Typical this happening when OH is away and I'm all on my lonesome with the big bad beasts!
Thanks again

I used to have this problem when we had a cat. The flies used to get into the cat food. Cleaning the bin and sprinkling it with Jeyes Disinfectant powder used to help. This is our 2nd year of fortnightly collections and the flies have increased year on year.
As for the Green cone I've had two. First one turned into fly city after my husband put in cat food and the 2nd one in our garden is still two thirds full after 2 years despite using the composting powder.0 -
We have fortnightly collections, but since really trying not to waste food (thanks to this forum!), our non-recyclable bin is only half full after 2 weeks.
I always wrap food waste in newspaper then tie up in carrier bag, luckily have never had a maggot problem, sounds awful!
I freeze things like chicken carcasses if it's not near collection day then put them in the day before (I have been known to take rubbish to work and put in their bin, I work in a kitchen so bins are emptied regularly!)0 -
my son was a falconer in his teens, kept a redtail hawk. He once forgot about a bit of meat in the pocket of his hawking waistcoat hung in a cupboard in his room..........
I only found one maggot though....
And 50 thousand bluebottles.
He's lucky he's still livin !!! LOL0 -
Shouldn't have read this thread just after eating breakfast! Hope you can get it sorted.

We are on fortnightly collections here too - I always clean my bins with boiling water and Jeyes fluid, it keeps them free of the nasties - I noticed that Jeyes are now doing a Bin freshener as well but I will stick with the fluid because it has never failed me yet (one glug to a bucket of boiling water) Or if you want to be a little more precise a capful using a concentrated fabric conditioner cap is a good guide I keep an old mop in the shed just to use on the binsBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light
